DMK president M. Karunanidhi and MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Sunday lashed out at the state government’s directive asking college students to write their assignments only in English. The duo express their view that such a move would lead to discriminating against rural students.
In a statement, Karunanidhi said that the decision to introduce English as a medium of instruction in state-run schools and directing students to write their assignments only in English would only further complicate matters. “Such a move that will create partiality (sic) towards students is highly condemnable,” he said.
Dismissing the argument that making English a teaching language would help students get employment, he pointed out that in many countries English was not even a spoken language. “In countries like Russia, Germany, Japan, China, their own languages are used as official and teaching languages,” he pointed out.
Vaiko charged that Tamil Nadu Council for Higher Education is keen on excluding Tamil rather than making it as a medium of instruction and to provide priority to those who had graduated from Tamil medium.
“The state government should reject the recommendation of the council considering the plight of rural students and to encourage those students to pursue education through Tamil medium,” he said in a statement.
